Erie Canal part 2

After leaving Canajoharie marina we made a quick stop at Johnsville marina to fill up with the cheapest diesel on the canal $2.55 a gallon then on to Little Falls where we entered the highest lift lock @40.5ft with a lifting gate (like a guillotine) as opposed to the normal swing gates. This was a busy little town with something on nearly every night of the week during summer -  bands, cheese festivals, stargazing with astronomers, sidewalk chalk art, children's talent quests, craft fairs, picnics, free movie nights, maypole dancing, fireworks, cruise meets of vintage & classic cars etc,.
The afternoon when we were there was the regular Thursday cruiseshow of classic & vintage cars right beside our dock. Then the dockmaster kindly gave us a lift into town where we splurged at a very good French restaurant, chatted with members of the Mohawk Valley astronomical Society  (one who was 100 years old) & invited to look through their telescopes, checked out the vendor fair in the old restored mill & enjoyed the Steve Falvo Easy Money Band - all in the town park.
Today we arrived at Rome free dock after a morning dodging many partially submerged logs some showing evidence of being "prop hit". We had one bounce off our hull but no damage to the prop.
The town of Rome boasts a faithful replica of the original fort - Fort Stanwix- built from original plans & documents. Construction began in 1976 and it appears as it did during the Revolutionary War on the original site (there are remains of a fireplace in 1758).  In 1777 the lifting of the Siege of Fort Stanwix caused the withdrawal of the British troops and  eventual surrender. The whole reconstruction - grounds, bastions, drawbridge, furnished barracks, ramparts, period actors and firing of muskets was a great historic site to visit.
