C & D Canal - Cheasapeake & Delaware Cities

The C & D Canal is a 14 mile canal linking the two Bays with Chesapeake City at the western end & Delaware city at the eastern end. It caters for large barges, freighters, tugs, large cruisers & all types of commercial & recreational vehicles. It's 35 feet deep and spanned by 5 bridges and when opened in 1829 after 7 years of digging with pick axes & shovels it short cut the ship route by 300 miles.
We spent 2 days at the Delaware city marina where we broke out the bikes and toured the "city" on them. Any small village seems to be called a city despite population figures so it wasn't such a big ride - our knees knew it though. The towns folk have a sense of humour  - the 2 restaurants that we ate at were "Lewinsky's on Clinton" and "Crabby Dick's". Another boating couple joined us at Crabby Dicks for dinner - where we enjoyed free crab balls compliments of the marina. I had a haircut at "Split Endz" for $20 and told her the story of the original NZ band whom a lot of hairdressers name their salons after, she was going to check it out on the web.
